Why Homeownership Feels So Hard For Younger Generations
Young people are facing one of the toughest housing markets in years. Rising mortgage rates, low inventory, and increasing costs are making homeownership feel out of reach for many Gen Z and millennial buyers.

For many young Americans, owning a home feels more difficult than ever before. A new report from Redfin shows that homeownership rates for Gen Z and millennials barely changed in 2024, signaling how challenging today’s housing market has become.
Only 26.1% of Gen Z owned a home last year. Millennials saw almost no movement either, sitting at 54.9%. Meanwhile, older generations continue to own homes at much higher rates.
The biggest reason is affordability. Mortgage rates have jumped significantly over the past few years, turning what once felt like manageable payments into monthly costs many young buyers simply cannot afford. At the same time, home prices, insurance, and everyday living expenses continue to rise faster than incomes.
Inventory is another problem. In many communities, there are not enough homes available, especially starter homes that younger buyers traditionally relied on to enter the market. Many homeowners are also staying put because they locked in lower interest rates years ago.
For some younger adults, renting feels safer and more realistic right now. But despite the challenges, homeownership still matters. It remains one of the best ways to build long term wealth, stability, and equity over time.
The path to buying a home may look different for younger generations, but it is still possible with the right planning, education, and guidance.
